Dealing with Cyberbullying

It’s Time to Protect Yourself Online

Let’s be real.

In today's world, the internet has become an integral part of our lives. We use it for socialising, entertainment, work and learning. However, with the increasing use of the internet, the risk of cyberbullying has also increased. Cyberbullying can happen to anyone, and it can be very hurtful and damaging.

It can even place employment and career opportunities on hold.

Chances are, you have either experienced online bullying yourself, you know of someone who has, or you’ve seen it happen as you scroll socials like TikTok, Instagram or Facebook.

But how do we deal with cyberbullying?! And how can we protect ourselves online?

So, What EXACTLY is Cyberbullying?

Cyberbullying is the use of technology to harass, humiliate, threaten, or intimidate someone. It can happen through various digital platforms, such as social media, messaging apps, online games, or emails. Cyberbullying can take different forms, such as spreading rumours, posting embarrassing photos or videos, making fun of someone's appearance or identity, or sending hateful messages.

Educate Yourself

Education is key when it comes to tackling mental health stigma. It's essential to understand that mental health issues are just as real and valid as physical health issues. By educating yourself on mental health, you can become an ally to those who may be struggling.

Take the time to research mental health conditions, symptoms, and treatments. When you understand what someone is going through, you can offer them the support and empathy they need.

This sort of research and understanding is also a positive way that you can begin learning about yourself… all while treating yourself with compassion and kindness.

Are you Being Bullied?

Cyberbullying can be subtle or overt, and sometimes it can be hard to recognise. However, if you notice any of the following signs, you may be experiencing cyberbullying:

  • Receiving hateful or threatening messages

  • Being excluded or shamed in group chats or social media groups

  • Having your personal information shared without your consent

  • Seeing posts or comments that are mocking or insulting you

  • Feeling anxious or depressed after spending time online

If you are experiencing any of these signs, it’s time to reach out for help and take steps to protect yourself. If you don’t know where to go or who to turn to, start HERE. With me! And we can navigate it together.

What to Do About It

Protecting yourself from cyberbullying is not only about using technology wisely but also about taking care of yourself emotionally. Here are some tips on how to protect yourself from cyberbullying:

Set Privacy Settings: Make sure to set your privacy settings on all social media platforms to control who can see your posts and information. Avoid accepting friend requests from people you don't know in real life.

Be Selective with Your Posts: Be mindful of what you post online, and avoid sharing personal information or provocative pictures that can be used against you. If you have doubts about a post, don't share it.

Don't Engage with Cyberbullies: Avoid responding to hateful messages or engaging with cyberbullies. Responding to their messages may escalate the situation and make it worse. Instead, block the person and report the incident to the platform's administration.

Seek Help: Don't be afraid to seek help if you are experiencing cyberbullying. Talk to someone you trust, such as a parent, teacher, or counsellor. They can help you deal with the emotional impact of cyberbullying and provide you with resources to protect yourself.

Take Care of Yourself: Cyberbullying can be emotionally draining, and it's essential to take care of yourself. Practice self-care by doing things that make you feel good, such as spending time with friends, exercising, or practicing mindfulness.

Remember, cyberbullying is not your fault, and you don't have to face it alone. There are people who care about you and want to help you.

Final Thoughts

Dealing with cyberbullying can be challenging, and it's important to remember that you are not alone. By following the tips above and reaching out for help, you can protect yourself from cyberbullying and stay safe online. Don't let cyberbullies bring you down; you are strong, beautiful, and capable of handling anything that comes your way. Stay positive, and don't forget to love yourself!
